I built and ran an electrical contracting business for 14 years, growing it from the ground up before selling it in 2022.
Like many trade business owners, I reached a point where working harder was no longer the answer.
As the company grew, more information became spread across spreadsheets, software, messages and people’s memories.
The work was being completed, but keeping track of everything became harder. Too much depended on certain people knowing what was happening, and it was not always easy to see the true position of a job or the business as a whole.
I began improving how work moved through the company—making responsibilities clearer, connecting information and giving the team a more consistent way of working.
That reduced mistakes, improved visibility and made it easier to understand job progress without constantly chasing people for answers.
It taught me that many good trade businesses do not have a problem with the quality of their work.
The problem is that the way they operate behind the scenes has not kept pace with their growth.
That is why I created John O’Connor Consulting.
I now help other trade business owners uncover where time, information and responsibility are being lost, then put practical ways of working in place to make the business easier to run.
